Brio Coffeeworks

Since 2014 · Nate Van Dusen, Magda Van Dusen

Overview

Brio was founded in 2014 by husband-and-wife Nate and Magda Van Dusen — both former Washington, DC international development workers who connected to specialty coffee as consumers and noticed Vermont was still dark-roast country when Nate visited home. Vermont native Nate is a two-time U.S. Roaster Championship finalist (2019, 2020) and the company is woman-owned by Magda; the Soda Plant roastery doubles as cafe and home-brewing retail boutique.

Known for

  • Vermont's flagship specialty light-roast pioneer
  • Woman-owned (Magda Van Dusen)
  • Two-time U.S. Roaster Championship finalist (Nate, 2019, 2020)
  • Cafe-roastery hybrid in Burlington South End Arts District
  • Microlot label collaborations with local Vermont artists

Why it matters

Brio brought third-wave light-roast specialty coffee to Vermont — a state previously known for cheese, beer, and spirits but defined by dark-roast in coffee — and built it into one of New England's most respected small roasters with two consecutive U.S. Roaster Championship finals appearances.
