Counter Culture Coffee

Since 1995 · Brett Smith, Fred Houk

Overview

Founded in 1995 by Brett Smith and Fred Houk — who met at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School and were inspired by the Smithsonian's Sustainable Coffee Congress — Counter Culture sold its first bag of coffee to Durham's Pop's Trattoria and went on to define the third-party direct-trade certification standard for the US specialty industry. The company became North Carolina's first certified organic roaster in 2002, established its written sustainability mission in 2003 (signed by Smith, Peter Giuliano, and Daryn Berlin on yellow legal paper), and now operates production facilities in Durham and Emeryville producing over 5 million pounds annually.

Why it matters

Counter Culture wrote the playbook for what specialty-coffee sustainability means in practice — not as a marketing claim but as a third-party-audited standard, an annual transparency report, an open-book management system, and a scaffolding of farmer education programs. Their training centers turned baristas into the country's most consistent specialty-coffee educators, even as the company itself stayed wholesale-and-education focused without operating retail cafes.
