Lattente

Since 2011 · Daniel Cifuentes, Zehan Nurhadzar

Overview

Lattente was opened in Palermo Soho in 2011 by Daniel Cifuentes — a Colombian who represented Argentina at the 2012 World Barista Championship — and his Indonesian business partner Zehan Nurhadzar. The pair met at university in Russia and are widely cited as Argentina's first specialty coffee bar. After six years sourcing from local roaster LAB Tostadores de Café, Lattente started its own roastery in 2017; the brand later opened a New York City offshoot.

Why it matters

The opening shot of Argentine specialty coffee. Before Lattente there was no third-wave specialty bar in Buenos Aires; afterwards the city grew a roaster ecosystem (LAB, Full City, Felix Felicis, Coffee Town, Puerto Blest) that all trace back through alumni connections to Lattente or LAB.
