Nylon Coffee Roasters

Since 2012 · Dennis Tang, Lee Jia Min

Overview

Nylon was founded in May 2012 by Dennis Tang and Lee Jia Min — a couple who met as baristas at Papa Palheta and Loysel's Toy — in a small ground-floor unit of an HDB estate in Everton Park. The name fuses New York and London, the cities that shaped each founder's coffee thinking. Operating from a single location for over a decade with no expansion plans, Nylon serves coffee with no teas, no pastries, no distractions — and a Black/White menu structure (the founders adopted the system from 2009 World Barista Champion Gwilym Davies) that defines milk drinks by cup size rather than name.

Known for

  • Singapore specialty coffee icon since May 2012
  • Single-location commitment — no expansion despite reputation
  • Coffee-only menu (no teas, no pastries)
  • Black/White menu system (sized 3oz, 5oz, 7oz) — adopted from Gwilym Davies
  • Annual visits to producer farms for sourcing relationships

Why it matters

Nylon is the disciplined counterpoint to Singapore's scaled specialty operators. Tang and Lee chose depth over breadth — same address, same focus, for over a decade. The single-shop commitment means every cup is touched by the founders, and the consistency of their flat white over 14 years of trading is the kind of result that scaled brands struggle to match.
