Press Coffee Roasters

Since 2008 · Steve Kraus, Tram Mai

Overview

Press was founded in November 2008 by Steve Kraus (a TV broadcasting professional, hence the name 'Press' — coffee press, panini press, wine press, media press) and his wife Tram Mai (a 12 News anchor), opening Press Coffee Food Wine at CityNorth in Phoenix months before the recession deepened. After closing the CityNorth location and reopening at Scottsdale Quarter in 2010, Press launched its in-house roasting operation in 2009 and grew to 19 valley locations across Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Chandler, and Gilbert — including a 2012 launch in Sky Harbor International Airport's Terminal 4.

Why it matters

Press is the Arizona scaled-specialty operator that survived the 2008 recession by pivoting from a food/wine concept to a coffee-anchored model — and grew to 19 valley locations including a Sky Harbor airport flagship. Where Cartel built around custom design + Stumptown lineage, Press built around hospitality + scale, making the two AZ operators a natural complementary pair in the Phoenix specialty story.
