Stumptown Coffee Roasters

Since 1999

Overview

Stumptown is one of the foundational third-wave specialty coffee brands in America, founded in Portland in 1999 by Duane Sorenson. A pioneer of the direct trade model, Stumptown built its reputation on multi-year relationships with producers like the Aguirre family of Finca El Injerto, paying quality-tied prices verified through Q-Grading. Acquired by Peet's Coffee in 2015 (now part of Keurig Dr Pepper), the brand has scaled significantly while maintaining its sourcing principles — in 2024, over 90% of their coffees were purchased through Direct Trade relationships of three-plus years, with 100% verified by sustainability auditor Enveritas.

Known for

  • Pioneering direct trade model (Duane Sorenson, 2003)
  • Hair Bender signature espresso blend
  • Cold brew innovation including nitro cans
  • Founded in former Hair Bender hair salon on SE Division
  • Roaster of the Year 2006 (Roast Magazine)

Why it matters

Stumptown helped define what specialty coffee means in America. While its independent-rebellion era is past, its sourcing infrastructure and direct trade pricing model remain a reference point for the industry.
