Market Lane Coffee

Since 2009 · Fleur Studd, Jason Scheltus, Jenni Bryant

Overview

Market Lane was founded in 2009 by Fleur Studd and Jason Scheltus, two Melburnians who met working at Anita Le Roy's Monmouth Coffee in London. Their first shop and roastery opened inside Prahran Market with a deliberately narrow proposition — filter coffee alongside espresso, full-cream milk only, no soy, and limited food — at a moment when traceable specialty coffee was almost unavailable in Melbourne. Jenni Bryant joined in 2010 and became a co-owner in 2019; the trio still run the business hands-on.

Known for

  • B Corp Certification (2022)
  • Nine shops across Melbourne including Prahran Market, Queen Victoria Market, the 'Paris end' of Collins Street and Carlton
  • 45kg Probat at the Brunswick East roastery and HQ
  • Sister green-import business Melbourne Coffee Merchants, also founded by Fleur Studd (2008) with her father, cheesemonger Will Studd
  • Mentorship lineage from Anita Le Roy of Monmouth Coffee, London

Why it matters

Market Lane helped reframe Melbourne coffee around traceability and seasonality at a moment when blends were the dominant format. Studd's parallel role at Melbourne Coffee Merchants, which imports green coffee for many Australian roasters, gives Market Lane an unusually deep position in Australia's specialty supply chain.
