Moyee Coffee

Since 2012 · Guido van Staveren van Dijk

Overview

Moyee was launched in the Netherlands in 2012 by Guido van Staveren van Dijk, who built one of the largest specialty roasteries in Africa in Addis Ababa in 2014 and ran his first FairChain harvest from Ethiopian smallholders that November. Killian Stokes and Shane Reilly added Moyee Coffee Ireland in 2016 after meeting at the UCD Innovation Academy, and the company has been using Hyperledger Fabric blockchain to track every transaction in its supply chain since 2017.

Known for

  • First FairChain coffee company — pays Ethiopian farmers ~€9/kg vs ~€3/kg commodity price
  • Hyperledger Fabric blockchain tracking every supply-chain transaction since 2017
  • Roasted at origin in Addis Ababa — one of the largest roasting facilities in Africa
  • B Corp certified
  • Wholesale partnerships with Groupon, Slack and other tech offices across Europe

Why it matters

The clearest working example of roast-at-origin economics — Moyee is the brand most often cited when explaining what FairChain (vs Fairtrade) actually means for African producer income.
