Rufous was founded in 2007 by Xiao Yang — a Q-grader and former Italian-cuisine chef — on a tucked-away stretch of Fuxing South Road in Da'an District, Taipei. The name comes from the rusty reddish-brown of well-roasted coffee; the cafe's dark, eclectic interior with its Synesso espresso machine and walls of coffee paraphernalia reads more like a Murakami jazz bar than a third-wave roastery, and Yang still personally manages every step from green sourcing to brewing.
Predates Taiwan's third-wave boom by years and is consistently named among Asia's most iconic destination cafes — a single-owner operation that shaped how a generation of Taiwanese coffee professionals think about hospitality and craft.
