Sigri Estate was first planted in the 1950s by Australian crocodile hunter and pioneer settler Tom Cole in PNG's Wahgi Valley, and is now part of WR Carpenter Estates' six-estate Western Highlands operation — the country's largest single coffee plantation, around 750 hectares processed at the Sigri and Bunum Wo wet mills. The estate's Typica plants trace back to seed smuggled from Jamaica's Blue Mountain rootstock around 1927, and that lineage is still legible in the cup as a smoky-hickory background and refined sweetness that has been compared to top Jamaican lots for over twenty years.
Papua New Guinea is one of the few coffee origins where smallholders produce the overwhelming majority of national output — roughly 85% — but quality and reputation have historically been bottlenecked by remote geography and inconsistent processing. Sigri is the closest thing PNG has to a flagship estate brand: it predates the country's specialty era by decades, set the quality benchmark via its Blue Mountain genetics, and provides the year-on-year cup consistency that has kept PNG on global menus.
