Tanamera Coffee

Since 2013 · Dini Aryani Criddle

Overview

Tanamera was founded in 2013 in Jakarta's Thamrin City Office Park by Indonesian businesswoman Dini Aryani Criddle, who had been struck on Australian holidays by the gulf between Australia's coffee scene and the low-grade arabica being sold in Indonesia despite the country being the world's second-largest coffee exporter. Master Roaster and Director John Lee runs sourcing from Aceh to Toraja to Papua, working only with Indonesian beans. The roastery won Champion International Roaster at the Melbourne International Coffee Expo in 2015 and 2016, has collected 51 international awards in total, and now operates roughly 40 outlets across Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia.

Why it matters

Indonesia is the world's second-largest coffee exporter but has historically shipped low-grade material — Tanamera was built explicitly to reverse that, working with farmers on cherry selection, fermentation, and drying so that Indonesian arabica gets graded above 80 SCA points and stays in-country. The Melbourne Champion International Roaster wins in 2015 and 2016 (against 800 entries) put Indonesian specialty on the world map and established Tanamera as the brand most associated with that turn.
