Drop Coffee Roasters

Since 2009 · Joanna Alm

Overview

Drop Coffee opened as a coffee bar near Mariatorget in Stockholm in 2009 and started roasting on a 1kg machine in the back of the shop a year later. Co-owners Joanna Alm — a three-time Swedish Coffee Roasting Champion who has placed second in the World Coffee Roasting Championship — and Stephen Leighton (founder of Has Bean and co-owner of 3FE Dublin) run the operation, which has been certified organic since 2018.

Known for

  • Joanna Alm — three-time Swedish Coffee Roasting Champion, World finalist
  • Co-owned with Stephen Leighton (Has Bean founder, 3FE Dublin co-owner)
  • Certified organic roastery since June 2018
  • Only sources from producers visited in person — minimum 86 SCA score, FOB prices published
  • Kalita brewing equipment supplier for Sweden since 2013
  • Joanna authored 'Manifest För Bättre Kaffe' (Manifest for Better Coffee)

Why it matters

One of the Nordic roasters that helped define the global light-roast template — small, owner-operated, transparent on prices, refusing to source from anywhere they haven't personally been. Drop's combined credentials (Joanna Alm's roasting championship record plus Stephen Leighton's UK/Ireland network through Has Bean and 3FE) give it influence well beyond its single-cafe footprint.
