Koppi was founded in fall 2007 in Helsingborg by Anne Lunell and Charles Nystrand — childhood friends turned husband-and-wife, and back-to-back Swedish Barista Champions (Charles 2005, Anne 2006). Both apprenticed in Oslo at Java alongside Robert W. Thoresen, the 2000 World Barista Champion behind Kaffa, before opening their original Helsingborg cafe-and-roastery on Norra Storgatan; in 2017 they closed the cafe to focus solely on roasting from a 2,000-square-foot industrial space, and today export roughly 90% of their coffee.
Despite operating from a small Swedish coastal city of 125,000, Koppi is one of the most internationally cited Nordic-light roasters of the past two decades — a destination roastery with no cafe whose coffees regularly anchor specialty subscription boxes around the world.
